UH Portage Food for Life Market

Food is medicine, yet too often the healthiest, freshest foods are expensive and difficult to find
in many communities. This lack of access can have an especially detrimental effect on patients
with or at risk of developing chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
Research has shown that patients who are food insecure are more likely to develop chronic
health issues, and that those with chronic issues who eat a healthy diet are able to better
manage their conditions and avoid complications.

UH Portage Food for Life Market is designed with clinical outcomes in mind. Patients receive a
referral from their physicians to access the market. With on-site dietitians, the market is doing
more than providing healthy food. Experts are available to offer suggestions and share ideas
about meal plans and how to prepare foods in ways that are healthy, easy and familiar. Since
opening in 2021, UH Portage Medical Center’s Food for Life Market, which is 100%
philanthropically funded, has served 724 unique patients.
